Our Cause

About Face

I began writing Sharing Is love- My brother and me  from my own personal experiences. This was due to having two boys who seem to struggle daily over their toys. My book came from the heart in order to improve their sharing habits. Babic Books wants to continue the personal connection to this project by working with AboutFace International.  AboutFace promotes emotional and mental well-being of individuals with facial differences through social & peer support, information and educational programs. AboutFace seeks to raise public awareness and understanding of the challenges and abilities of people living with facial differences. This non-profit organization encourages individual’s to embrace their difference and build confidence to face the world.

Why is this cause important to me? I was not born with a facial difference, but I did have first hand experience in my own life. At the age of 18 years, I was in a serious car accident that changed my life, as well as my family’s. Thankfully, I survived, but one result was severe facial damage. This led to many years of reconstructive plastic surgery to repair facial scarring, plus both eyelid and nose reconstruction by talented surgeons. During those seven to eight years of looking noticeably ‘different’, I faced many emotional challenges alongside the physical healing. The public stares and comments took strength to move past and look beyond. Today, I still have some facial scarring and facial ‘differences’ that I accepted years ago. It is proudly part of who I am.

Thankfully, being in my late teens when the accident occurred, I did not experience childhood teasing and cruelty. I was surrounded by love and support from family and friends. But there are many young children who face these differences from birth, and their families and children truly benefit from groups like AboutFace who help to build core values by empowering and encouraging. By offering programs and services like youth camps, adult workshops and retreats, About Face help people with facial differences gain self-confidence, learn essential life, social and leadership skills, and experience personal enrichment and a sense of empowerment by being connected to a  relatable community.

I have been fortunate to volunteer with About Face for 15 years. I  have photographed at their events and print advertising, volunteering at functions,  hosting adult phone workshops, and now contributing a portion of my book sales to About Face.  I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Anna Pileggi, Executive Director at About Face. Her energy and efforts is always inspirational.

Thank you for reading about this important cause.   Knowledge is crucial.

Sincerely,
Anita Babic
