Babic Books was created by Anita Babic, wife, mother of two young boys and entrepreneur.
The past couple years, I have learned to accept and embrace the fact that I am a creative entrepreneur and it’s what makes me tick. I am not a stranger to owning my own business. I have run a successful commercial photography business for 15 years (www.anitazvonar.com). I am proud of my photography company, but sometimes in life we need a new challenge….something totally fresh. This is why I chose to start my own publication company and – most importantly – writing for children.
I do not believe you can start any new business unless it comes from the heart, and my kids are certainly a huge part of who I am. Benjamin is now 5 1/2 years and Oliver is 3 1/2. They are typical boys in that they are very active, lively, adventurous, sometimes rough, and often stubborn. Do they love reading? You bet! Some may not believe me, but my firstborn son used to sit through VERY lengthy books at the age of 3 months. 3 months! There was no hitting the book, flipping the pages; he actually sat and listened. Benjamin was always an active baby, and the only time I could keep him calm was reading a book to him. This continues today, and he will daily correct me if I skip or mispronounce a word in one of his books.
My first book was written due to my kids’ daily inability to share. My oldest son had the biggest issue sharing toys with his younger brother. So one day I sat and wrote a rhyming book about sharing. Because I’m an entrepreneur at heart, I decided to take the book to another level, hire an illustrator, and research the steps into becoming self-published. I am so glad I did!
I fortunately found Rocio Arvea Goopar, a talented illustrator from Toronto who followed my designs and vision, and was very pleasant and easy to work with. I couldn’t have done it without her. She has illustrated both of my Sharing Is Love books. I found a web designer who has helped to build my site, a fundamental aspect to having any business. I am thankful to these individuals and hope they will continue to grow with me.
I would also like to thank my girlfriends. You know who you are for giving me your feedback and edits on my books. It is very much appreciated!
Do I enjoy being a part of this new world of publishing? Sure I do! Selling a product instead of a service is a new exciting avenue for me. It’s a great learning experience, and by joining sites like Twitter I have connected with and gained tips and motivation from others experienced in the industry.
At the moment, I have began writing my third book. This book is very personal and essential for me to write as an author. My third book is for ages 5 to 8, and aims to teach acceptance and empathy to those with differences or disabilities. It is a heavier topic, but one I feel is lacking in children’s books out there at the moment. I believe that if kids learn to accept and embrace the various differences around us from a young age (whether be in a disorder, race, culture or visual difference) this will lower bullying in schools. This can be done through books.
Thank you for reading and I welcome your messages, reviews and feedback. Anita@BabicBooks.com
